The Battle of Saragarhi was a last-stand battle fought on September 12, 1897, between 21 Sikh soldiers and thousands of Afghan tribesmen. The Sikhs, led by Havildar Ishar Singh, defended the outpost of Saragarhi against overwhelming odds. All 21 Sikhs were killed in the battle, but their bravery and sacrifice have been commemorated ever since.
